Rehearsals for Departure / Site 9831-B is a hybrid, poetic-textual work unfolding alongside my long-term experimental feminist sci-fi (SF) film and installation project, Bodies of the Future. Combining narrative fragments, epigraphs, and a field-research log, the piece registers the material, infrastructural, and temporal conditions that render certain futures inevitable. Shipyards, factories, transit corridors and dismantled landscapes are approached not as backdrops but as rehearsal spaces: sites where departure, extraction, and redundancy are practised and normalized.

Rather than offering linear narration, the work assembles observations, speculative gestures, and the field notes of a lone operative, DROBE, who records and misrepresents what he encounters. By blending pre-narrative reflection with immersive, sometimes fantastical reportage, the piece functions as a parallel strand to the larger SF project, offering a speculative lens on the habits, infrastructures, and imagined logics that precede transformative events.~

Kunstlicht, (OUTER) SPACE(S), Vol. 47, no. 1/2, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This Kunstlicht issue is dedicated to (outer) space(s): the political, societal, technological and imaginary beyond the dominant narratives and hegemonic histories of science fiction, space travel and other space-related entities.

Bodies of the Future: 01: Sensory Walk, 2026,participatory event, Buitenplaats Brienenoord, Rotterdam, NL

Bodies of the Future: 01: Sensory Walk was held on June 20, 2026, the first of two participatory events developing an ongoing feminist sci-fi (SF) project. Participants moved through the landscape of Brienenoord island wearing handmade sculptural components — contact mic gloves, frog-footprint silicone shoes, and polarized sunglasses set with porcelain elements.

The wearables function as speculative tools: each introduces a minor bodily or perceptual shift, asking participants to inhabit the landscape differently and to sit with a question of evolutionary opportunity — what the body becomes when the world it evolved with is ending. Participants worked as agents within the project's questions rather than an audience to them.

Building on a test event held in October 2025 with Platform DIS in Nijmegen, Sensory Walk extends the project's method of embodied world-building through modest, physical interventions. Within the larger 16mm film project, it forms part of a braid of scripted, documentary, and participatory material — a speculative inquiry into feminist, post-patriarchal, post-capitalist futures.

Sensory Walk (TEST)(work in progress documentation), 2025, 35mm colour photographs, collaborative event with Platform DIS, Waal River, Nijmegen, NL

Sensory Walk (TEST) documents a developmental event held on October 24, 2025, conceived as an experimental testing ground for an ongoing feminist science-fiction (SF) project. The session was designed to trial sculptural costume components — silicone frog footprint wearables and copper ear-pieces — developed to subtly alter participants’ movement, listening, and sensory attention in relation to landscape.

Rather than functioning as finished objects, the wearable sculptures operate as speculative tools: they introduce minor bodily and perceptual shifts that invite participants to experience their environment differently, foregrounding questions of evolution, adaptation, and relational perception. The walk unfolded collectively, with peers moving through a shared landscape while attending to sound, balance, rhythm, and bodily awareness.

The event functioned as a collaborative research moment, generating feedback on the material, sensory, and experiential dimensions of the work. Insights from this test directly inform a series of participatory scene-making events planned for spring 2026. Within the larger project, Sensory Walk operates as an early experiment in embodied world-building, using modest interventions to explore speculative evolution, feminist futurity, and collective imagination beyond dominant human-centered frameworks.

This sound work weaves together field recordings and audio
materials gathered throughout the development of come, Memory.
Created in collaboration with composer and field recordist
Bergur Anderson, it extends the project's research into the
acoustic realm — where sites, spirits, and histories resonate
through texture, rhythm, and interference — tracing a sensory
geography of ancient landscapes and speculative mythologies.

come, Memory is a film and scenographic installation; a result of a long trajectory of research, experimentation and collaboration, that centres on a series of ancient (especially Neolithic) European sacred sites, and looks speculatively, through embedded, eroded and residual evidence, at the presence/absence of the divine womanly (Great Mother) and at human-spiritual-relationships with the earth.

Dancer’s Slab, 2022
Super 8mm film transferred to digital video with sound,
3 minutes, 25 seconds

This experimental short engages with the Järrestad petroglyphs — a quartzite slab in southern Sweden bearing more than twelve thousand 3,000-year-old carvings associated with ritual, fertility, power, and myth. Filmed through a speculative lens, the work traces a composite, semi-fictional womanly figure used as a narrative and research guide across ancient sites.

Catalogue-like observations of the carvings are intermittently interrupted by fleeting bodily presences — clothing, limbs, shifting rhythms — unsettling the film’s role as document and inviting an embodied encounter with the site’s layered histories.

Filmed in September 2021 in Marcinkonys, Lithuania and at The Dancer’s Slab near Järrestad, Sweden.
Recorded, edited, and composed by Katrina Niebergal in June/July 2022 in Oakland and Rotterdam. Sound by Bergur Anderson.

Come to your senses was a monthly radio show that aired on Good Times Bad Times community radio, Rotterdam from June 2021 until September 2022.
Through voice, sound, and song Come to your senses explored senso-r-eality; poetic capacity; cosmic entanglement; and beyond — it also acted as a-kind-of-notion-device or sort-of-diary for my life, research, and art practice.

Link includes access to my sound/mix/research archive, running back to 2013 

Surviving a Week in the Wilderness: a guide for transient survivalists, 2013 artist-book
printed in an edition of 100
So you find yourself in a survival situation. Whether you’re adrift in shark-infested waters, orphaned amongst the tangled vines of the Amazon, or wandering the ruins of a fallen civilization, it is important to identify your resources, to consider your options, and above all, to keep your head! Though you may have arrived here as a victim of circumstance, or by your own design, you will need some basic advice and direction to make the most of your situation. You can take comfort in the fact that many a brave adventurer before you has found herself in positions far more acute than your own, and your obstacles are surmountable.
